THE SALT LICK

Prior to 1689, very little activity was seen in the lower Cumberland Basin now known as Nashville. Around 1710, French trader Jean du Charleville set up a post just North of where the state capitol is today at the sight of a sulfur and salt spring they named the "French Lick." Animals naturally gathered here to lick the salt from the spring, which in turn attracted Native hunters to the area.As fur trade developed between Native Americans and European settlers, the area became ripe with small settlements devoted to the capture, killing, and selling of wild game and attracted the likes of a man who would go on to become Nashville's first permanent resident.

A CAPITAL CITY

Following the 1796 statehood of Tennessee, the citizens grappled with the location of where a capital should be established. For years the capital has temporarily been located in cities like Murfressboro & Knoxville. Due to their locations too far east or west, and a lack of viable transportation (like a river), Nashville was selected as the state's permanent headquarters in 1843. The capitol itself was erected between 1845 and 1859 and was designed by William Strickland, an architect who would go on to be named "The Father of Greek Revival Architecture." The building would mark the  beginning a new wave of Athens-inspired art and building in Nashville.
